Eating Protein and Carbohydrates after Lap Band Surgery

After lap band surgery, it is imperative that you consume adequate amounts of both proteins and carbohydrates. Protein provides your body with the amino acids that bodies need to build tissues, make hormones and enzymes, and to replace cells.

Eggs, milk, cheese, legumes, nuts and meat are all high sources of protein. When consuming meat choose first lean sources of meat such as fish, chicken and lean pork. The higher fat content of beef may be difficult for some to digest after weight loss surgery.

Aim to consume between 30 and 40 grams of protein a day. You’ll need to eat smaller meals throughout the day, ensuring that you’re consuming some protein with each meal or snack.

Carbohydrates provide the energy that our bodies need to regulate our core temperature, and to allow our organs to do their jobs properly. There are three different forms of carbohydrates: starches, fiber and simple sugars.

Starches are the complex carbohydrates that should make up the main body of carbohydrates that are consumed. These are foods such as whole wheat bread and cereals, pasta, brown rice and fruits and vegetables.

Simple sugars are empty calories. They offer little in the way of nutrition and can rapidly raise your blood sugar level. Sweetened drinks, ice cream, chocolate and some cereals are all high in simple sugars. These foods should be avoided after weight loss surgery. Read the labels to insure there is no hidden sugar.

Fiber is made up of insoluble and soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber is that which cannot be digested by the body and it passes through us. Soluble fiber is digested by the body and takes excess glucose and fat with it as it passes out of our body.

Having weight loss surgery means constant vigilance over what and when you eat. Carefully balancing your protein and carbohydrate intake will ensure that you stay healthy and continue to lose weight.
