Diet and Nutrition before Lap Band surgery
The decision to undergo Lap Band surgery is a big one, and involves major lifestyle changes on the part of the patient. This type of weight loss surgery takes place in a hospital setting, but the changes that you need to make should start well before your operation date so that your body is prepared for the upcoming weight loss as much as possible. Your diet needs to undergo some alterations prior to the Lap Band surgery, but these changes are generally relatively easy to make, and will pay off with weight loss and good health in the long term.
The pre-surgery diet is actually similar to the post-surgery diet in many cases, but each doctor has his own requirements. Your doctor will give you specific guidelines regarding your diet, but you will usually be advised to avoid certain foods. Fried foods, sugary foods, and foods with high carbohydrate levels are usually not allowed in a Lap Band surgery diet.
Alcoholic beverages are also generally not allowed prior or following your surgical procedure. Remember, your eating methods are almost as important as the actual foods that you eat. You will need to eat slowly and deliberately, fully chewing each bite and ensuring that you taste the food rather than eating too quickly. Your doctor will explain the length of time that you should follow this diet prior to your operation, and any other special dietary requirements that may be crucial to your individualized nutritional needs.
