According to an FDA Advisory Committee, the Lap-Band device by Allergen, which is used in weight loss surgery, is safe enough for individuals with a BMI as low as 30. Currently, Allegan’s Lap-Band device is FDA approved for weight loss in patients with a BMI of 40 or more, a BMI of 35 or more with other serious health factors (such as heart disease) or are 100 pounds or more overweight. Allergen is hoping to get FDA approval for their Lap-Band device for weight loss surgery for individuals with BMI’s of 35 and 30 (for people with serious health conditions). With the recent FDA Advisory Committee vote, Allergen may soon get their wish.

Panniculectomy (pronounced pah-nik″u-lek´tә-me) is a plastic surgery procedure to remove superficial excess fat and skin on the abdomen. Its name is derived from the Latin word pannus, which means a piece of cloth. In essence, the procedure involves removing the hanging “apron” of skin on people who have lost a substantial amount of weight — usually 50 pounds or more. A panniculectomy is different than a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. In a tummy tuck procedure, excess fat and skin is removed and muscles are tightened, whereas a panniculectomy only removes excess skin and fat.
