The researchers found that stress hormones can actively change the ability of specific neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids to control appetite. Normally, the brain produces these neurotransmitters that help regulate appetite. In the absence of food, it may be the resulting stress rather than the lack of nutrients that triggers the increased food drive. The endocannabinoids are blocked from controlling appetite.
